Office of Student Affairs

Election/Selection Process

General Process and Timeline

All student leadership elections and selections are coordinated through the Office of Student Affairs (OSA). Most positions are filled during the fall of the first year, typically following the second Foundations assessment (see Table).

Students will receive information about available leadership opportunities in advance of the election and selection process. Self-nominations are solicited for all positions.

All interested students are required to participate in a brief advisory session with OSA to review the roles and responsibilities of the position(s) they are considering and to discuss how participation aligns with their academic priorities and personal goals. Students who wish to proceed following this advising session will be included in the class election process.

Class elections are conducted for all positions and serve as a key component of the overall selection process. For positions designated as elected roles, outcomes are determined solely by class vote.

In the event that a student leader is unable to fulfill their role, ad hoc elections or selections may be conducted to fill the vacancy.

Selection Process for Designated Roles

While all student leadership positions are valued, certain roles carry greater responsibility and/or time commitment. These positions are filled through a holistic selection process conducted by a committee of faculty and senior student leaders.

Selection decisions are based on the qualifications required to fulfill the role and may include consideration of:

  • Student application materials or portfolio
  • Input from the class election process
  • A formal interview

For these positions, the initial steps—including self-nomination, OSA advising, and participation in the class election—occur as outlined above. Final selection is determined by the review committee.
