UMSOM Researchers Create Revolutionary Database to Map Neocortical Development Across Species

Researchers have described major advances in the understanding of the development of the neocortex —layer-by-layer and cell-by-cell—thanks to a pioneering database developed at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) that combines multiomic data from 188 different studies. The revolutionary and publicly accessible database—called the Neuroscience Multi-Omic Analytics (NeMO Analytics)—is helping scientists make groundbreaking discoveries about the brain and disease development by using vast amounts of human, non-human primate, mouse, and organoid data.

Multi-Strain Probiotic Therapy Shows Promise in Preventing Bacterial Vaginosis Recurrence

A global team of experts has identified a promising new approach to prevent recurrence of bacterial vaginosis (BV), a condition that affects millions of women worldwide. In a Phase 1 randomized clinical trial of women in the United States and South Africa, researchers found that a short course of a multi-strain probiotic restored protective bacteria to the vagina, significantly reducing disease recurrence. Cell Host & Microbe published the results from the study—a collaboration between investigators from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Mass General Brigham, the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), and collaborators from the Vaginal Microbiome Research Consortium.

Scientists have warned that leaving out other populations could skew results in areas such as drug development, diagnostic testing, and polygenic risk scores—which looks at many genetic variations in a person’s DNA to predict their disease risk.
