Primary Care Track

T

The University of Maryland School of Medicine Primary Care Longitudinal Elective for first- and second-year medical students is a collaborative program of the Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics. The program is led by Dr. Katherine Jacobson (Family Medicine) with support from Dr. Nisha Divakaruni (Pediatrics) and Dr. Leah Millstein (Internal Medicine). Together they guide participating students through a structured academic experience in primary care.

The elective introduces students to primary care role models early in medical school and provides ongoing clinical exposure throughout the first two years of training. Students gain longitudinal experience in primary care settings that serve both rural and urban underserved communities. The goal of the program is to expose students to the breadth, impact, and continuity of primary care practice and to strengthen early interest in careers that improve access to care in communities with the greatest need.

By pairing students with committed faculty clinicians who practice in diverse settings, the elective supports professional identity formation, promotes understanding of community-based care, and encourages students to consider primary care careers in Maryland after graduation.
