The Dermatology Residency program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is a highly advanced, three-year training program. Appointments are made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) beginning only at PGY-2.
After matching but prior to appointment with UMD, residents must successfully complete a PGY-1 year in an ACGME accredited program in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, or Pediatrics. We strongly recommend enrollment in rigorous, academic PGY-1 programs, as they will best prepare you for what will be expected of your performance within our program.
We especially seek self-motivated, academically competitive candidates who are drawn to research. The candidates we select are physicians who are deeply committed not only to clinical practice, but to attaining leadership positions in Dermatology both within and beyond their home institutions.
Requirements
Applicants must graduate from a medical school in the United States accredited by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), an accredited medical school in Canada, or an accredited osteopathic school in the United States. If a candidate is a graduate of a medical school outside of the United States or Canada, they must possess the standard certificate of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Application Process
Applicants must submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates selected for an interview will be notified on our interview release date (November. 16, 2026). In-person interviews will be held on January 8, 2027. Candidates selected for an interview will receive further instructions.
Our residency program’s application process relies heavily on ERAS application’s token preference signaling system. Applicants must complete the AAMC ERAS application. We will not consider applicants who have not signaled our program with a gold or silver token.
The data provided to us via the AAMC ERAS application allows us to conduct a holistic review of each applicant. Please be personal and honest in completing the application; we want you to highlight what is meaningful to you in your pathway to becoming a Dermatologist.
