Welcome to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (STC)

Maryland’s only Primary Adult  Resource Center (PARC) for Trauma
at the heart of Maryland’s unique Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system

About the STC

STC is the nation’s first and only integrated trauma hospital that is dedicated to the management of severely injured trauma patients, seeing more than 7,000 admissions annually with a remarkable 95 percent survival rate.

Founded by Dr. R Adams Cowley in the early 1970s, he developed the concept and coined the term “Golden Hour,” which has shaped the delivery of modern trauma care. As pioneers in the treatment of shock, providing state-of-the-art care to the critically ill patient is a foundational tenet of our program.

In addition to offering exceptional patient care, the mission of the STC continues to foster groundbreaking research, develop innovative therapies, and create novel programs that improve the educational experience of our trainees and the lives of our patients.
