The University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology is a leader in cutting-edge cancer research and care, offering advanced modalities (e.g. proton therapy, GammaPod® breast-SBRT) and robust translational programs. As part of the NCI-designated Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC), we have an established history of industry collaboration on novel therapies and technologies. Our investigators have created FDA-approved devices (e.g. GammaPod) and secured major NIH funding for projects like FLASH radiation therapy. These assets, combined with a large, diverse patient population and a full spectrum of radiation platforms, make us an ideal partner for biopharmaceutical R&D companies.


Preclinical & Translational Development Assets

ROBIN OligoMet Center: Focusing on radiation effects in oligometastatic prostate cancer.

Division of Translational Radiation Sciences: Features a network of research laboratories focusing on areas such as: chromatin/DDR studies, TP53/radiosensitization, DNA damage/repair in leukemia, and GPCR signaling.

FLASH Research Program: Multi-modality FLASH RT platform (electron and proton) devoting approximately $1.8M departmental funding in 2020; preclinical models and imaging studies to accelerate ultra-high-dose-rate therapy development.

Medical Physics Labs: Dedicated to AI/image-guidance work including virtual physics phantoms and proton prompt-gamma imaging.


Clinical Development Capabilities

NCI-Designated UMGCC: The Department of Radiation Oncology is an integral contributor to team science and high-profile clinical trials at the UMGCCC. Multidisciplinary tumor boards and rapid accrual are institutional strengths.

Advanced Modalities: Full portfolio including image-guided external-beam RT, SBRT/SRS, FDA-cleared GammaPod™ breast SBRT, high-dose-rate brachytherapy, and clinical hyperthermia. These capabilities facilitate specialized trials (e.g. dose-escalation, re-irradiation).

Proton Therapy: Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) operates in partnership with the UMGCCC and provides access to pencil-beam scanning protons. It is a top 10 national enrollment site in proton trials.

Trial Accrual: Exceptional enrollment capacity, dedicated research staff, and diverse community sites (Columbia, Baltimore–Washington, Upper Chesapeake, Shore, Capital Region) enable broad patient access. UMGCCC is consistently recognized as a top-accruing site for NRG Oncology trials.

Innovations in Care:  Exemplar innovations in care include: GammaPod breast SBRT invented at UMD (first clinical use in 2017) and ongoing device trials; advanced imaging (4D-CT, onboard MRI) for motion management.


HEOR and Post-Approval Capabilities

Real-World Evidence: Including EHR and health care claims. Racially and ethnically diverse 2.3 million patient health system and community engaged research methodologies.

Advanced analytics: Including large language model development.
