The University of Maryland Department of Neurology is a national leader in neuroscience research and care. The program is consistently ranked among the top 10 U.S. neurology research programs, with over $10 million in annual research funding. Our faculty are developing new treatments for Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, MS, stroke and other disorders. We invite collaborators to join us in leveraging our robust preclinical cores, cutting-edge clinical programs, and rich patient populations as we jointly develop and test next-generation neurological diagnostics and treatments.

Preclinical & Translational Development Assets

Expertise leveraging mRNA expression analysis, DNA mutation analysis, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, primary neuronal culture, and rodent animal models in the research of epilepsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, cortical malformations, and autoantibody-mediated neurological syndromes.

University of Maryland - Medicine Institute for Neuroscience Discovery (UM-MIND) – Campus-wide neuroscience institute uniting basic and clinical researchers in development, aging/neurodegeneration, and trauma/brain injury to accelerate discovery and therapy translation.

Brain & Tissue Bank – neurologic specimens.

Molecular and Genomic Services – CLIA-certified Maryland Genomics and Translational Genomics labs for high-throughput sequencing and biomarker development, plus a large Clinical Development Capabilities.

Comprehensive Specialty Centers – Run investigator-initiated and sponsored clinical trials in areas such as epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation (DBS), stroke therapies, and MS drugs.

University of Maryland Multiple Sclerosis Neuroimaging and Biomarker Research Group – Improves the treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis through the development of improved diagnostic and prognostic tools. Their work is focused on the use of advanced MRI techniques for patient evaluation.

HEOR and Post-Approval Capabilities

Researchers associated with the University of Maryland’s Stroke Research Center are developing new strategies to treat and prevent stroke through the use of observational research. Coordinating center for a consortium of more than 40 global investigators compiling genetic data and performing genome-wide association studies.

Racially and ethnically diverse 2.3 million patient health system and community engaged research methodologies.
