Hematology/Oncology Brochure
Translating discovery into innovative, scalable, patient-impacting oncology therapeutics requires collaboration. It depends on the integration of capabilities spanning mechanistic science, trial execution, and real-world evaluation. The Division of Hematology/Oncology in the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine welcomes these collaborations. We are part of an ecosystem that includes the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center with a multidisciplinary translational research mission and clinical implementation through University of Maryland Medical System. Our researchers execute on high-value opportunities with biopharmaceutical R&D partners by leveraging our robust large-scale clinical trial participation, leading outpatient cancer care, and use of real-world data to inform clinical development decisions and post-marketing safety and effectiveness analytics. We are a partner of choice for preclinical package development, early/late-phase trials, and real-world evidence generation with a shared goal of accelerating access to better therapies for diverse patient populations.
Preclinical & Translational Development Assets
Translational Laboratory Shared Resource Supports in vitro and in vivo preclinical models for evaluating novel agents/combination strategies; supports projects from in vitro stages through Phase 1 trials including CRISPR KO/SNP engineering support to accelerate mechanistic and target-validation work.
Fannie Angelos Cellular Therapeutics Laboratory FDA cGMP-guided cell-based therapy manufacturing supporting early-phase clinical trials; FACT accreditation for CAR-T and other cellular immunotherapies; supports a transplant and cellular therapy program; More than 350 CAR-T patients treated since 2018.
Genomics Shared Resource Provides high-throughput sequencing and CAP-accredited clinical lab capabilities supporting translational research, clinical trials, and personalized care; integrates bioinformatics approaches.
Pathology and Biorepository Shared Resource Provides banked patient samples and pathology/histology consultation services to support translational studies; extensive frozen tumor archives and linked clinico-demographic data infrastructure.
Tumor Immunology and Immuno-engineering Program Focuses on translating immune regulation insights into novel diagnostics and immune-based prevention/treatment strategies, enabling industry-aligned immunotherapy and cell-therapy collaborations.
Clinical Development Capabilities
Major therapeutic trial footprint Approximately 400 patients entered into therapeutic clinical cancer trials. Currently conducting a diverse portfolio of trials with various scientific partners.
The Clinical Research Management Office Supports development, activation, conduct, monitoring, registration, data management, and regulatory readiness (including audits) for trials involving people with cancer.
Clinical Research Oversight Committee and NCI-required protocol review/monitoring system Trial governance includes oversight committees supporting scientific/safety review and monitoring functions.
HEOR and Post-Approval Capabilities
Center for Real World Data/Adaptive Clinical Trials under the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing Positioned to build pragmatic/adaptive oncology research leveraging health-system data access and decentralized trial approaches, aligned with regulatory engagement and community participation goals.
RWE Analytics Core Provides HIPAA-compliant access to large real-world data assets and supports investigators with content and programming expertise.
Biostatistics Shared Resource Supports quantitative preclinical/clinical/population research via study design, analytic methods, collaboration, and reporting—relevant to HEOR endpoints, comparative effectiveness, and pragmatic
study analytics.
