UMatter 1:1 Program: Prioritizing Your Wellbeing from Day One

UMatter Logo

At the University of Maryland School of Medicine, we believe that supporting your mental health is essential to your success. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Student Counseling Center to offer every incoming medical student a one-on-one introductory appointment—automatically scheduled as part of our opt-out approach.

What to Expect:

  • You will receive a secure and confidential email from the counseling center prior to your scheduled session.
  • A confidential, individual meeting with a licensed counselor
  • An overview of counseling services available to you
  • A chance to ask questions and get comfortable with accessing support
  • No pressure—just information, connection, and options
  • If you opt out of this meeting, you are welcome to request services at a later time
  • Details for rescheduling will be included in the email from the counseling center

Why Opt-Out?

Many students face barriers to seeking help—whether it’s time, uncertainty, or stigma. By scheduling this session for everyone (unless you choose not to participate), we make sure no one is left behind. You can opt out at any time, but we encourage you to take this opportunity to invest in your mental health.

Please note: OSA only was involved in assigning initial sessions and is not involved in any of the rescheduling or opting out process. This is to ensure and respect the complete confidentiality that the Counseling Center offers.

Your Wellbeing Matters

UMatter is more than a program—it’s our commitment to making sure you feel supported, connected, and equipped to thrive throughout medical school.
