- Hiatal hernias are commonly retrosternal and present with GERD-like symptoms
- A barium swallow is the diagnostic test of choice.
The differential diagnosis for circumscribed air-fluid levels on chest X-ray includes:
- Hiatal hernia
- Cavitary disease (e.g., tuberculosis)
- Empyema
- Lung abscess
