The mission of the Program in Health Equity and Population Health is to advance health equity and population health through transdisciplinary research, education, and service.

Vision

We will build and strengthen strategic collaborations with the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), health organizations, and the local, state, national, and global communities served by the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Objectives

• Establish and sustain a rigorous program of transdisciplinary research on health equity and population health in the United States and other countries. This program will address priority areas of concern to community stakeholders by:
  1. Identifying the social, biological, and community factors that contribute to health disparities (i.e. epidemiology).
  2. Translating the results of population-based studies into clinical practice and community-based interventions to improve health care delivery, quality of care, and health outcomes among a wide range of populations.
  3. Disseminating research findings to investigators, public health practitioners, policy-makers, and the public.
• We educate and build health disparities research capacity through didactic and experiential education that includes training in sound methods for studying health disparities and population health.
• Address the health care needs of our partner communities to improve health outcomes through program evaluation, community-based participatory research, and direct service provision.
