The faculty and staff of the University of Maryland School of Medicine Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine have established a national exposure registry of oncology personnel handling hazardous drugs. This builds on two decades of scholarly investigation, clinical assessment of exposed workers, and public health policy development.

This national registry will enable the development of outcome studies examining the degree of compliance with recommended safety practices, circumstances of and work tasks linked to high exposure, and the important health effects of concern in this group, including cancer and reproductive health.

Overview

The Hazardous Drug Safety Center is home to the Hazardous Drug Exposure Registry.

What is a registry? A registry collects and organizes health data from a specific population. In this instance, the registry follows oncology workers who handle or have a work history of handling hazardous anti-cancer drugs. The registry will characterize the demographics of exposed workers, the circumstances of work that are linked to exposure, and the health effects of concern in the group.

The Hazardous Drug Safety Center advocates for the adoption of safety practices related to hazardous drug handling.

As part of our outreach activities, Safety Center personnel engage with professional organizations, public health agency partners and other stakeholders to promote the safe handling of hazardous drugs. We will conduct and participate in policy forums and be a source of content expertise and technical guidance to individual facilities and organizations.

The Hazardous Drug Safety Center provides education and training about hazardous drug safe handling.

Safety Center personnel participate in professional and scientific meetings, national training forums, and educational events. Findings from registry data will be published as they become available to disseminate and promote safe handling best practices.
