Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

The Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS) is proud to offer the Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, a cutting-edge program that provides courses of study leading to both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. This innovative intercampus program features collaborative efforts from not only our own  faculty and departments but those of University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Our Graduate Program provides top-tier training in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and quality instruction in a variety of biomedical research foci.

Muscle Biology Training Program


For Postdoctoral Fellows & Predoctoral Students 

This program provides interdisciplinary training in muscle biology for predoctoral and postdoctoral students. The structure, function, development and plasticity of skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle will be considered on the molecular, subcellular, cellular, tissue and organ levels.

Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)


For Prospective Medical & Predoctoral Students  

The mission of our MSTP is to train a diverse and creative cadre of physician-scientists who will become leaders in their chosen fields of research, develop new knowledge and translate it to enhance clinical practice. The MD is combined with a PhD program offered by the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS).

There are many active NIH-funded training programs at the UMSOM, covering a broad spectrum of biomedical training. These training programs provide financial support, didactic and research training, and a variety of professional and career development opportunities to postdoctoral fellows and predoctoral students enrolled in GPILS, as specified for each training program.
