Limited Submission Opportunity

What is a Limited Submission Opportunity?

A limited submission opportunity (LSO) is where the sponsor—including federal, state, foundation, nonprofit, and industry—restricts the number of proposals, applications, or nominations that may be submitted from an institution.  Check the Eligibility section of the funding announcement to determine if it is a limited submission opportunity.

UMB Process for a Limited Submission Opportunity

The process varies based on the sponsor’s requirements but always involves special coordination between the School of Medicine and UMB. Frequently, a competitive internal review and selection process is required to ensure UMB identifies the strongest applicant.

Contact the Office of Research Affairs (som-ora@som.umaryland.edu) as soon as possible for guidance and eligibility if you wish to apply for a limited submission opportunity. The LSO application process may stretch to 12 weeks or more.

Passano Foundation Clinician-Investigator Award for Career Development

The Passano Clinician-Investigator Awards promote translational research by supporting early-career clinician-scientists. The  $37,500 award supports salary and fringe benefits for two years, allowing protected time for research. This allows the awardee to acquire the experience and preliminary results necessary to apply for external grant support and career development opportunities. Full-time clinicians at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level are eligible.
