Annual Evaluations | Departments, Institutes, and Centers

Every year, the Dean’s Office assesses the performance of all departments, institutes, and centers for research, clinical, education, service, and financials. These reviews help guide strategic initiatives for the School of Medicine.

The Office of Research Affairs works collaboratively with the departments, institutes, centers and UMB’s Sponsored Program Administration to provide unit demographics and grants and contracts data to ensure an accurate reports.

Unit Demographic Report

The unit demographic report uses data in the School of Medicine faculty information system to provide an overview of faculty composition summarized by faculty titles, appointments, and research roles.

Grants and Contracts Report

The grants and contracts report provides a detailed overview of research performance for core and primary faculty, and includes:

Annual Review Timeline for Units

Early July: ORA sends a reconciliation email to chairs/directors with a list of awards funded through the past fiscal year

End of July: Chairs/directors review the list of awards and notify ORA of any errors

August: ORA works with SPA to update award information as needed

September: SPA closes their books and provides final fiscal year awards data. ORA confirms the accuracy of final data

End of September: Chairs/directors add additional information, e.g. strategic initiatives, publications, and other research success metrics

Early October: The final scorecard report is uploaded to the UMSOM Annual Review Application portal

Annual Faculty Evaluations

All School of Medicine faculty must submit a self-evaluation each year. The evaluation has six domains; faculty must submit information on at least three domains, including at least one primary domain.

As part of the review process, all faculty must meet with their department chair, division chief, or institute or center director to review the evaluation.

Annual evaluations open in May and are due by the end of August each year. The evaluation system can be accessed at: Annual Faculty Performance Evaluation.
