As the first public medical public school in the United States, UMSOM has a long history of leading innovative biomedical investigations. We have been widely recognized for our dedication in advancing medical therapeutics to solve generational challenges in Maryland and across the U.S.
Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research: an independent non-profit organization that provides a comprehensive ranking of US Medical Schools based on the NIH grant dollars received during a given federal fiscal year. The Office of Research Affairs (ORA) conducts a thorough review of NIH award data each September and on the Blue Ridge Ranking website the following January, requesting updates as needed. Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC): The AAMC provides a ranking of US Medical Schools based on Grants & Contracts Expenditures based on self-reported data from the LCME Annual Financial Questionnaire.
NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey: the primary source of information on research and development expenditures at U.S. colleges and universities.
US News & World Report: A multifaceted media organization that medical schools for consumers based on multiple metrics. The Office of Research Affairs provides annual information on awarded grants and numbers of faculty involved in research to support the ranking.

Annual Evaluations | Departments, Institutes, and Centers
Every year, the Dean’s Office assesses the performance of all departments, institutes, and centers for research, clinical, education, service, and financials. These reviews help guide strategic initiatives for the School of Medicine.
The Office of Research Affairs works collaboratively with the departments, institutes, centers and UMB’s Sponsored Program Administration to provide unit demographics and grants and contracts data to ensure an accurate reports.
Unit Demographic Report
The unit demographic report uses data in the School of Medicine faculty information system to provide an overview of faculty composition summarized by faculty titles, appointments, and research roles.
Grants and Contracts Report
The grants and contracts report provides a detailed overview of research performance for core and primary faculty, and includes:
- Total awards in dollars
- Number of research faculty
- Total awards per research faculty
- Funding by sponsor type across multiple funders and NIH mechanisms
Annual Review Timeline for Units
Early July: ORA sends a reconciliation email to chairs/directors with a list of awards funded through the past fiscal year
End of July: Chairs/directors review the list of awards and notify ORA of any errors
August: ORA works with SPA to update award information as needed
September: SPA closes their books and provides final fiscal year awards data. ORA confirms the accuracy of final data
End of September: Chairs/directors add additional information, e.g. strategic initiatives, publications, and other research success metrics
Early October: The final scorecard report is uploaded to the UMSOM Annual Review Application portal
Annual Faculty Evaluations
All School of Medicine faculty must submit a self-evaluation each year. The evaluation has six domains; faculty must submit information on at least three domains, including at least one primary domain.
As part of the review process, all faculty must meet with their department chair, division chief, or institute or center director to review the evaluation.
Annual evaluations open in May and are due by the end of August each year. The evaluation system can be accessed at: Annual Faculty Performance Evaluation.
Modeling and Analytics
The Office of Research Affairs is responsible or reporting and analyzing research-related data for the School of Medicine. This includes tracking extramural proposals and awards, modeling the effects of possible policy changes, and generating tools to support data-driven decision making across departments, centers, institutes, and the Dean’s Office.
