University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

Two Rounds of Workshops:

(You Pick 2!)

Print to Practice: 3D-Printed Models for Procedural Education

Drs. Krista Tookhan, Vandana Racherla and Meghan Figueras (MS2)

This interactive workshop will explore the use of low-cost, 3D-printed task trainers to support procedural education in medical learners. Using a 3D-printed lumbar spine model developed for lumbar puncture training, participants will experience a hands-on simulation activity while exploring principles of procedural teaching, deliberate practice, feedback, and simulation-based education. Participants will practice identifying anatomic landmarks and performing the steps of a lumbar puncture using the task trainer, then discuss how similar accessible simulation models can be incorporated into undergraduate and graduate medical education. The session will also highlight practical considerations in developing and implementing 3D-printed procedural trainers.

Your Retirement Speech: Values, Identity, Impact

Drs. Beth Lamos & Kerri Thom

“The Retirement Speech” is a guided, reflective-writing exercise in professional identity formation (PIF) that we currently use with incoming MS1s during Practice of Medicine. Participants imagine their own retirement celebration and draft the speech they hope will be given about their career — surfacing the values, relationships, and legacy that matter most to them, well before those things are determined by circumstance. For MELA Education Day, we are adapting this exercise for a faculty audience with two intertwined goals: (1) to give faculty their own protected time to reconsider their personal and professional mission using the same reflective tool, and (2) to equip them, as advisors, mentors, and course/clerkship leaders, with a ready-to-use facilitation framework so they can run this same exercise with their own students and trainees. The session therefore functions both as an experience and as a train-the-trainer workshop.

Tools for Teaching: Structured Observation of the Neurologic Exam

Drs. Melissa Motta, Nicholas Morris, Thomas Cusack and Neil Porter

How do you turn a few minutes at the bedside into effective teaching? This interactive workshop gives participants a practical, repeatable approach to teaching and providing feedback on the neurologic examination using two tools from the Society of Bedside Medicine: the 5-Minute Moment and 10-Minute Moment.

Following live demonstrations of the HINTS examination and ankle reflex technique, contextualized within the bedside evaluation of patients with dizziness and back pain, participants rotate through teacher, learner, and observer roles with a volunteer patient in small, preceptor-led groups.

Participants leave with a simple approach they can use on their next clinical teaching encounter: identify one or two feedback-worthy findings, describe them using the tool’s language, and close by asking two questions: Was the approach organized? Was the patient’s comfort maintained? The framework can be applied to teaching any component of the physical examination.

Upping Your Digital Slide Game

Drs. Elana Smith and Kristen Stauffer

PowerPoint presentations remain one of the most widely used tools for medical education, yet few receive formal instruction effective slide design. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn best practices for slide design, discover practical tips and time-saving techniques through the incorporation of AI tools, and explore common mistakes that can diminish audience engagement. By the end of the session, attendees will be equipped with actionable strategies to create more impactful educational presentations.

Awards followed by a Light Reception | 3:30 - 4:30 pm

The following Awards will be presented:
