Leadership: A Conversation through the Eyes of Resiliency

Leadership in medicine takes several different forms. In this session, Dr. Golden will share her experiences being thrust into leadership following several crises within the hospital and Baltimore community. Through an interactive activity, Dr. Golden will guide students on how to navigate stakeholders with various perspectives, address obstacles, and implement programs that have real impacts on our health system. This session will include lunch. By the end, participants will:
- Understand strategies for overcoming unexpected challenges, taking risks, and cultivating teamwork with diverse perspectives
- Identify how their own background and story shape their worldview
- Practice getting comfortable and effective in health systems leadership roles
Translating Research to Community Impact During Patient Interactions

Through the simulation of real-life problems encountered at her community clinic, Dr. Golden will provide students with valuable insights into social determinants of health and the community resources that are available to patients. We’ll draw on Dr. Golden’s expertise and extensive work in diabetes, endocrinology, and population health to discuss how providers can implement realistic changes to workflow that address in-person clinic needs. This session will include light refreshments. After this session, participants will be better able to:
- Identify strategies for turning academic research into real-world impact
- Think through how physicians can help patients navigate social, environmental, and access barriers
- Recognize the role of genuine partnership with patients and community organizations in advancing health equity

As a physician, researcher, and leader at the forefront of health equity and organizational change at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Golden will discuss her personal journey launching department-wide initiatives and changing system-wide policies to redesign health system structures to better support providers and patients and ultimately improve clinical outcomes. After this session, attendees will be able to:
- Describe how health systems can intentionally embed quality, safety, and equity into their mission-focused work
- Recognize opportunities in their own settings to build more equitable and inclusive systems
- Identify real examples of community advocacy that move the needle on population health and research
