Visiting Student Eligibility and Application Information
Only 4th‑year medical students in good standing from a U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) are eligible. No exceptions.
2026–2027 Application Timeline
- VSLO Elective Catalog Opens: ~Friday, March 13, 2026
- Application Submission Opens: Monday, March 30, 2026 at 8:00 AM EDT
- Visiting Student Rotation Blocks*:
Block 01: July 6 - July 31
Block 02: August 3 - August 28
Block 03: August 31 - September 25
Block 04: September 28 - October 23
Block 05: October 26 - November 20
Block 06: November 23 - December 18
Block 07: January 4 - January 29
Block 08: February 1 - February 26
Block 09: March 1 - March 26
Block 10: March 29 - April 23
*Please note, departments reserve the right to offer Blocks based on the availability of spots, so some dates may not be available.
Required Documentation for OSA Purposes
- COVID‑19 Vaccination: Proof of full vaccination and booster required.
- Malpractice Insurance: Coverage must extend through or beyond the end date of the latest elective requested.
- OSHA Universal Precautions Training:
- Must meet OSHA standards for bloodborne pathogens and personal protective equipment.
- Training must be valid through the entire rotation period.
- Many home institutions provide a certificate or completion document.
- If not, training may be completed through approved online providers (e.g., National OSHA Foundation, American Red Cross) at the student’s expense.
- Document Format: Upload all documents as PDF or JPG.

What is the duration of each extramural elective?
A minimum of four weeks.
How many extramural electives may a visiting student complete?
One per student per specialty.
Is a separate application required for each elective request?
Yes.
If a departmental coordinator gives verbal approval, is a VSLO application still required?
Yes. All applications must be submitted and processed through VSLO, without exception.
What is meant by “OSHA Certificate” on the application?
This refers to documentation of training that meets OSHA standards for bloodborne pathogens and PPE use.
Are off‑block rotations permitted if the schedule does not align with elective dates?
No. UMSOM does not accommodate off‑block rotations.
