Medical Student Personal Insurance Requirements

UMB and/or the LCME require all medical students to carry several different types of insurance coverage while enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine program, specifically, health insurance, accident insurance, disability insurance, and malpractice insurance. These policies are critical for the care and protection of medical students and others with whom they interact (faculty, students, patients, other members of the healthcare team) while participating in medical education.

Students are expected to follow the reporting and documentation procedures as required by each insurer. Failure to comply with campus insurance coverage requirements could be prevent a student from participating in certain medical education courses, clerkships, and other scheduled activities. If left unresolved, students could delay their progression in the program, and/or be dismissed from the program.

Student Health Insurance Plan

Medical students are required to maintain active health insurance coverage throughout their enrollment. Insurance must provide comprehensive coverage for medical, surgical, and mental health services. Students who do not have health insurance will be required to enroll in the UMB Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).  Learn more at Student Health Insurance Plan.

Student Accident Insurance Plan

Medical students are required to have accident insurance coverage the provides benefits in the event of injury sustained during academic or clinical activities. Learn more at Student Accident Insurance Plan.

Student Disability Insurance

Medical Students are required to carry disability insurance that offers financial protection in case of a disability that prevents them from continuing their medical education.

All students are automatically enrolled in AMA Med Plus Advantage disability insurance (Policy Number 758390) as required by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, or the LCME.  The cost will be included in SOM MD Program fees at approximately $55 per year.
