About the Course

The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center Department of Radiation Oncology is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 16th Annual Dr. Karl Prado Physics & Radiobiology Review Course from April 11 - April 13, 2019. The event will held at the University of Maryland BioPark, 801 West Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

The purpose of this three-day course is to provide a comprehensive review of radiobiology and physics for senior radiation oncology residents who are taking the board exam for the first time and radiation oncologists already in practice who are preparing for their re-certification exams. Dosimetrists will also benefit and are encouraged to attend. The instructors for this course include a combination of invited nationally recognized faculty and our own top-ranked faculty in the departments of radiobiology and physics.

This premier review course will provide participants with an overview of current concepts in radiation biology, physics and dosimetry and will be conducted in an interactive workshop format with lectures and questions and answers sessions.

The physics portion of the program begins Thursday, April 11 at 8 a.m. This one-and-a-half day segment is intended to provide a comprehensive review of physics and dosimetry topics related to radiation oncology.  It will be conducted in an interactive workshop format with lectures, and questions and answer sessions.

The one and a half day radiobiology portion of the program begins Friday, April 12 at 1 p.m.  Participants will have an overview of current concepts in radiation biology, be provided an update of changes that may impact radiation therapy, gain an understanding of molecular biology principles and techniques, and learn about new radiation modalities being utilized or in development.

The early bird cost for the course is $475.00 (must be postmarked by March 20, 2019). Beginning March 21, 2019 and on-site, the standard registration cost of $525.00 will apply. We are also offering the opportunity to take one portion of the course (either Radiobiology or Physics) for $300.00. The registration fee is payable by Check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover, and advanced registration is required.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants should be able to describe and discuss:

  • Current molecular and cellular biology and its impact on modern radiobiology
  • Biological basis of current and upcoming treatment modalities
  • Physical principles of radiation therapy, including planning and setup for external beam therapy, brachytherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Imaging application to radiation therapy, such as in treatment simulation and target definitions
  • Methods of measurement of radiation quantity and quality, and the system of dose calculation
  • Principles of radiation safety and radiation protection

Warren D. D’Souza, Ph.D. M.B.A., FAAPM

Warren D. D’Souza, PhD, MBA, FAAPM, Professor, Chief of Medical Physics, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Vice President, Enterprise Data and Analytics for the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS)

...has served as Course Director of the Radiobiology and Physics review course since 2009 and has led the coordination of the Medical Physics lecture materials. He has published over 75 peer-reviewed journal articles and 11 patents in areas pertaining to treatment planning, organ motion manage­ment and informatics. He has been funded by the NIH, NSF and various industry partners and served on numerous grant review panels.

Refund Policy

Once a registration is submitted, you will have 24 hours to submit a request for refund.  After that time, no refund will be provided for any reason; however, the registrant will have access to all course content, including video of the lectures.  Video of the lectures will be available online only and will be placed on the website approximately two weeks after the event.  All other course content will be available for download via the course site.
