Resident Trainee Alumni

Over the past 100 years the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology has grown from a small academic division into one of the world’s leading treatment, research, and training centers. Our trainee alumni are the pioneers whose vision make such a difference in the lives of many patients, as well as students and colleagues who continue the department’s tradition of remaining in the forefront of radiation oncology.

The residency education mission is to cultivate an environment which provides the full spectrum of learning opportunities in clinical radiation oncology, medical physics and radiobiology. Our flexible curriculum is designed to enable a resident to optimize their learning experience throughout their four years of training. It is our expectation that upon the completion of the program a resident will be an outstanding radiation oncologist, capable of making an immediate impact in either an academic or community practice setting.

Where did they go after graduation? Rad Onc Medical Resident Alumni 2010-2023

Between 2010 and 2023, 20 University of Maryland graduates have begun their careers in an academic setting, 2 have obtained a fellowship, and 15 have gone into private practice.

Dr. Karl L. Prado served as a faculty member and invaluable medical physics educator to trainees and staff from 2009 to 2017 at the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology. He dedicated himself to clinical program development and the advancement of new technologies and safety protocols in radiation oncology, so that every treatment could be tailored to the specific needs of each patient.

Dr. Prado was a long-time speaker at the course up until his retirement in 2018. In 2019, the Physics and Radiobiology Review Course was renamed to honor the memory and unmatched teaching abilities of Dr. Karl L. Prado.

The Dr. Karl Prado Endowment for Radiation Oncology Trainees was also named for Dr. Prado to honor his remarkable influence. This fund advances education and training in radiation oncology for talented and compassionate healers and innovators who will aggressively pursue dramatic advances in radiation therapy. The Dr. Prado endowment helps support our educational mission by funding trainees, medical and physics residents, fellows, radiation therapists, dosimetrists, nurses, and medical students for conference attendance, publication fees, educational activities, wellness, and supports department educational courses.
