Application Process & Benefits

All applicants must possess either 1) a PhD in Medical Physics, or 2) a PhD or equivalent degree in physics or relevant fields with the following six subjects taken college level or above:

  • Radiological Physics and Dosimetry
  • Radiation Protection and Radiation Safety
  • Fundamentals of Imaging in Medicine
  • Radiobiology
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Radiation Therapy Physics

All applicants must apply through the AAPM Medical Physics Residency Application program (MP-RAP). The University of Maryland Medical Physics Residency program subscribes to the Medical Physics match managed by the national Matching System (NMS) and therefore expects all applicants to sign up for the match.


Residency Interviews

After our selection committee has reviewed your application, you will receive an email or phone call informing you of the status of your application. All interviews are by invitation only. Interviews last for half of the day. We have found that this format allows for a more organized interview for both you and our faculty and minimizes interruptions. In 2020, all interviews will be virtual. The residents will be asked to record a 5-minute presentation and send the recorded file a week ahead of the interview day.


Resident Financial Support 

Residents in this program are supported by funds from the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). Stipend levels for residencies are defined by the GME office. Physics residents are hired as residents (starting from PGY1) through the UMMC and are subject to salary increases. Updated information is available on the GME website.

Typical financial support and burden for medical physics residents are as follows:

  • Salary: $55,961/year for PGY1 and $58,699/year for PGY2 for year 2021
  • Travel and academic support: Residents may attend at least one (1) national meeting in the second year of the program, depending on the availability of funds and the resident’s performance. Financial support will include registration, travel, and boarding for two (2) national meetings (~$5000 for the duration of the program). Typically our physics residents attend the main national AAPM meeting in July of their second year and the Spring Clinical meeting in March or April of their second year.

Vacation & Benefits

Residents receive 15 paid vacation days plus a number of Federal holidays off. Our division policy is that the Program Director and the Advisor at the time of the vacation must first approve time away. No more than half of the residents can be out of the clinic at any time. Approved conference days will not be counted towards your 15 annual days of vacation.
