Biosketch

Dr. Smith attended Washington University (St. Louis) and received an A.B. in Physics and Mathematics in 1979. He worked as an exploration geophysicist for Gulf Oil Corporation (Houston, TX) from 1980-1985. Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of California, San Diego in Earth Sciences, where he studied seismological imaging of the earth. From 1989-1992 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in nuclear medicine physics at Duke University in Durham, NC, followed by Assistant Research Professor positions in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University (1992-1997) and in the Department of Radiology at Duke University Medical Center (1995-1997). Dr. Smith was a Physicist (1998-2000) and Staff Scientist (2000-1001) in the Nuclear Medicine Department of the Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. He then joined the Detector and Imaging Group in the Physics Division, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, VA as a Biomedical Imaging Physicist (2001-2007). Dr. Smith moved to the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 2007, where he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
