Dr. Pei received a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) from the University of Toronto and her Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from McMaster University.  After completing her training in Emergency Medicine at the Hospital for University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Pei continued to pursue her interest in medical education and global health by earning a Master of Education (M.Ed.) from the University of Toronto and a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) from George Washington University. Dr. Pei is currently a clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Maryland School of Medicine.  She has received several grants for her work in China involving emergency medical training, disaster preparedness, trauma, and emergency systems development.  Since 2004, Dr. Pei has worked in partnership with several hospitals including Peking Union Medical Hospital and Xiang Ya Hospital to develop emergency medicine in China.  In conjunction with her Chinese partner institutions, she has successfully received a number of grants to develop emergency medical system in China.  Dr. Pei has held an appointment as Visiting Professor at Xiang Ya Hospital, Central South University in Hunan, China from 2012 - 2015.   As a result of her work in China, Dr. Pei has held the appointment of Ambassador to China for the American College of Emergency Physicians since 2009.
