After training in General Internal Medicine first as a resident at the Harvard Medical School program at the New England Deaconess Hospital and then as a Fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the General Internal Medicine Clinician Educator Track, I served as Assistant then Associate then Program Director of the General Internal Residency Program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and as a teaching attending in a primary care clinical practice. I was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians in 1997. In 1998 I joined the Department of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine as Assistant Professor, and was appointed Associate Dean of Graduate and Continuing Medical Education. I am currently Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development.
In addition to maintaining compliance with ACCME Accreditation Criteria, the SOM Program in CME achieved Accreditation with Commendation under my leadership in 2013.
In 2005 I was asked to add Faculty Development to our CME Portfolio of Programs. Our office organizes a mandatory New Faculty Orientation for 150 new faculty each year. The Program offers workshops in teaching skills and professional development open to all faculty, residents and fellows. I have served in regional and national leadership roles in the AAMC's Group on Educational Affairs CME Section.
I have been active in educational program develeopment and assessment locally, regionally and nationally in Faculty Development. The SOM Teaching Portfolio for Promotion Curriculum is one that has been presented nationally and disseminated and adopted at other institutions since 2002. I serve as an external reviewer for the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators and have served as members of national concensus conferences on Educational Scholarship convened by the AAMC. I continue to teach workshops and provide individual consultation in development of the Teaching Portfolio and the Clinical Portfolio.
In recent years I have taken on the role of the Chief Conflict of Interest Officer for the SOM. I have been responsible for developing policy consistent with national guidelines and State and Federal Law regarding Conflict of Interest. These are considered model policies with the letter grade "A" by the American Medical Student Association. We regularly conduct workshops for faculty and departments on identifying, disclosing, managing and reporting industry relationships and financial conflicts of interest. I serve as a member of the AAMC's Forum on Conflict of Interest in Academe.
