Biosketch
Dr. Cohen has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry since 1983, when he joined the staff of the original Walter P. Carter Center on Fayette Street, serving in multiple roles, including Director of Emergency Services, consulting psychiatrist to the day treatment program, inpatient attending, and Clinical Director. Subsequently, Dr. Cohen moved to the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center First Episode Clinic doing clinical interviews for the RAISE (Recovery After Initial Schizophrenic Episode) study. In 2011 he returned to the downtown campus to become Medical Director of the Department of Psychiatry Faculty Practice, the University of Maryland Employee Assistance Program, and the University of Maryland Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic.
Clinical Specialty Details
Dr. Cohen provides care to adults with disorders of mood, thought, and anxiety. In addition to the standard approaches to care, he maintains an interest in complementary methods that have a growing base of evidence as adjunctive treatments, that may contribute to improved outcomes, such as exercise, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, and cognitive reframing. In addition to his clinical work Dr. Cohen remains involved in the teaching and supervision of residents and medical students.
