Dr. Boutros received his MBChB (M.D. equivalent) from University of Alexandria, Egypt and completed surgical training in Paris, France where he also obtained the Diploma of Surgical Specialty and a Master of surgical science. He had a surgical residency in NY Presbyterian Columbia University / Newark Beth Israel-Monmouth, NJ in General Surgery and Surgical Oncology fellowship in Roger Williams Medical Center/Boston University.

Dr. Boutros received additional advanced training in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the internationally renowned hepatobiliary center at Paul Brousse Hospital, France. He is the author of multiple publications and book chapters in the field of gastrointestinal surgical oncology and had multiple presentations in national and international meetings on innovative minimally invasive surgical techniques for complex abdominal cancers. He is the principal investigator of the LivermetSurvey at the University of Maryland, an international study for patients who receive surgery for hepatic colorectal metastasis. He is also the principal investigator of the irreversible electroporation study for unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer.

Research/Clinical Keywords

gastrointestinal surgery oncology, hepatobilary surgery, pancreatic surgery, GI cancer

Research Interests

Current research protocols that Dr. Boutros is studying include: Results of advanced Minimally Invasive Surgical Oncology; Immunotherapy for peritoneal surface malignancy; Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) as a Simple, Non -Invasive Marker of Immunologic Response in Pancreatic Cancer; Results of Irreversible electroporation for locally advanced unresectable pancreatic cancer; and Postoperative carbon monoxide production as a novel method to assess hepatic regeneration and predict hepatic related complications after liver surgery.

Clinical Specialty Details

Dr. Boutros has a special interest in treating gastrointestinal surgical pathologies and hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers, with an emphasis on minimally invasive surgery for cancer of the esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, liver and pancreas. He has an extensive experience in totally laparoscopic and robotic complex surgeries for gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary surgical pathologies and cytoreductive surgery and heated chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) for primary peritoneal cancer and peritoneal dissemination of intra-abdominal cancer.

Dr. Boutros research is focused on minimally invasive approach for gastrointestinal cancers, non resectional therapy for hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer and immunotherapy for peritoneal surface malignancy. He is affiliated with several top-rated hospitals in the region, including the University of Maryland Medical Center, Tate Cancer Center Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he serves a Medical Director and Chief of Surgical Oncology.

Surgery Videos

Minimally Invasive Surgery to Treat GI Cancer

Whenever possible, surgical oncologist Cherif Nazmy Boutros, MD offers minimally invasive techniques to his patients who need gastrointestinal surgery for cancer. In this video (which does not have sound), he shows minimally invasive gastrectomy, subtotal pancreatectomy with splenic preservation, pancreaticoduodenectomy (aka Whipple procedure), cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC, hepatectomy/ablation for liver tumors and peritonectomy.

Minimally Invasive Robotic Assisted Esophagectomy (RAE)

In this video, Cherif Boutros, MD, performs a minimally invasive robotic assisted esophagectomy (RAE) using the da Vinci Si platform.
