I am a clinically trained geriatrician and clinical investigator focused on improving the function and quality of older adults with chronic conditions. Specifically, we study the biological underpinnings of many age-associated conditions (including metabolic dysfunction, changes in body composition, atherosclerosis and cognitive decline) as well as their potential modifiability through lifestyle interventions. We are also interested in novel models of care delivery to increase access as well as improve function and quality of life while reducing complications/costs. I have extensive experience assessing veterans, and through my clinical work developed a deep appreciation for the importance of so-called “safety” issues, with a particular interest in the burdens of medications on older individuals with multiple comorbidities.
I am also deeply involved in education, teaching at all levels of the medical school as well as trainees across a number of professions. I have mentored a number of students over the past decade, and increased the prominence of Geriatrics on campus. I have been Co-Director of the University of Maryland Geriatric Medicine Fellowship since 2008, and since 2014 have been both Director of the Baltimore VAMC’s Special Fellowship in Advanced Geriatrics and Acting Associate Director for Education and Evaluation of the Baltimore Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC).
