After finishing medical education, Dr. Akhter started training in surgery. He did research in the surgical research lab at Johns Hopkins University with emphasis in wound healing and esophageal reflux before moving to New York for residency. While there he developed an interest in vascular and interventional radiology. Dr. Akhter pursued a fellowship in interventional radiology and then did a fellowship in body imaging before completing radiology residency in Miami. He then moved back to Baltimore and did a fellowship at University of Maryland with emphasis on interventional oncology before joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor. He became Director of Interventional Oncology and assistant program director for VIR fellowship and IR residency in 2016. He became Program Director of VIR fellowship and Integrated and Independent IR Residency in 2019.
Presently, his practice includes all facets of interventional oncology including TACE, TARE, percutaneous thermal and IRE ablative techniques as well as other IR procedures including TIPS, hepatobiliary interventions, UFE's and transradial access for elective and emergent endovascular procedures.
Research/Clinical Keywords
Interventional Oncology. Percutaneous Thermal Ablation. IRE, TIPS, TACE, TARE, UFE, Transradial access.
