The Hearing and Balance Center audiologists are professionals with a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree who have earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Each audiologist also has met licensure and credentialing standards to work in the state of Maryland and at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Audiologists are trained to:

  • Evaluate hearing and identify hearing loss
  • Determine the need for hearing aids and assistive listening technology
  • Select and fit hearing aids
  • Counsel patients and their families about the effects of hearing loss on daily life
  • Evaluate the balance system
  • Provide rehabilitation for BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo)
  • Refer to specialists (e.g. otolaryngologist) for medical or surgical management of hearing loss or balance problems when indicated
  • Develop and implement hearing conservation programs
  • Evaluate audiological cochlear implant candidacy
  • Perform activation and follow-up programming and testing of cochlear implant patients
