COVID-19 Student Research Updates

Please read the information below for the status of student research as it relates to COVID-19 restrictions.

Letter from the Director

Dear Students,

As you plan for your summer research experiences and your research electives, we wanted to remind you that you are able to work in UMMS clinical settings and in UMB laboratories AFTER you get permission from OSR.

Please send an email to Dr. Miriam Laufer (mlaufer@som.umaryland.edu) and Ms. Eileen Eldridge (eeldridge@som.umaryland.edu) at least 6 weeks prior to beginning any of your in-person research activities.

These policies may change and we will be sure to keep you updated.

As always, feel free to reach out if we can provide any further assistance.

Miriam K. Laufer, MD, MPH
Professor of Pediatrics
Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health
Assistant Dean for Student Research and Education

UMSOM Coronavirus (COVID-19) Policy Updates

Are you a medical student looking to conduct in-person research?

In order to return to conduct in-person research activities, please begin the process by completing the following steps:

Step 1: The student must contact the OSR at least 6 weeks prior to beginning any in-person research activities.

Step 2: The student should complete and submit the COVID-19 Research Training Request Form to gain access to the COVID-19 Research Training Course on blackboard.

Step 3: The Protocol Mentor would complete the COVID-19 Research Approval Form, which is sent to the mentor automatically after the request form has been completed. The mentor will receive a letter as an attachment from the OSR Director.

Step 4: The student would be added to the COVID-19 Research Training Course on Blackboard

Step 5: Student takes a snapshot of the completion screen to inform OSR and mentor that they have successfully completed the training

Step 6: Once approved, the student and mentor will receive a final approval notice from the Office of Student Research. The student should not return to in-person research activities until they have received this final email notice from OSR.
