Guideline on Required and Recommended Instructional Time
During the pre-clinical years of the M.D. curriculum, students receive two hours of large group format lecture and two hours of required small group format educational activities (including problem solving, conferences, clinical correlations, labs, etc.) each morning, Monday through Friday, for a total of twenty required hours of classroom instruction per week. In addition, each student has an average of one required three-hour block of clinically-based instruction during one afternoon per week. Any additional co-curricular activities (e.g., clinical shadowing, research, community engagement) must take place outside of the regular curriculum time requirements. There are no required weekend activities.
For successful completion of the curriculum it is recommended that students spend a minimum of two hours of independent study per hour of classroom educational activity.
Students are expected to participate in clinical educational activities, including didactic sessions, for a minimum of forty hours per week. Please see the Duty Hours Policy that limits the maximum amount of time that students are expected to be in the clinical setting.
For successful completion of the curriculum it is recommended that students spend a minimum of ten hours per week of independent study related to the clinical rotation.
