Northeast Ohio William Carlos Williams Poetry Writing Competition

The William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition, sponsored by the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), is open to students attending allopathic or osteopathic schools of medicine in the United States and Canada.

Each year hundreds of entries are submitted to the competition and go through a preliminary screening by the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University, and final judging will be by Richard M. Berlin, M.D., psychiatrist and poet from the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

The first-, second-, and third-place winners will be invited to read their poetry at an awards ceremony at NEOMED. In addition, the editors of the Journal of Medical Humanities review the winning poems and consider them for possible publication in that journal.

Educators in Training (EdiT)
UMB has created a new collaborative program designed to enhance the teaching and in-classroom skills of up and coming academic professors, and for seasoned professors who would like to enhance their effectiveness in the classroom. The program is called Educators in Training or EdiT. It is similar in design to an existing program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County called PROFIT. However, EdiT is a collaborative program between the Graduate School and Campus Life Services here at UMB.
This five-session pilot program will grow and change to meet the needs of up and coming professors. All sessions are one hour and will take place on Mondays from noon-1:00 p.m. in the SMC Campus Center, Room 203. Lunch will be provided at each session.

The session topics are as follows:

  • 9/26-Introduction to Program; Overview of Brain Science and the Importance of Active Learning
  • 10/3-Course Design: Beginning with the End in Mind
  • 10/10-Assessment Strategies
  • 10/17-Lesson Delivery Strategies
  • 10/24-Syllabus Design and Final Wrap Up

Those who are able to attend all five sessions will receive a Certificate of Completion.
You may register for the first session at the following link: https://umbforms.wufoo.com/forms/educators-in-training-registration-form/
