Kidney Transplant Program

Founded in 1968, the University of Maryland Medical Center's Kidney Transplant Program has established a national reputation for innovation and technical excellence. It is among the nation’s largest and most active transplant programs. The program has consistently excellent patient outcomes and is staffed by highly experienced Transplant Nephrologists, Surgeons, Pathologists, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, and Coordinators.

Every year, close to 250 kidney transplants are performed at our center. In addition, around 20 patients undergo pancreas transplantation, either as solitary organ or combined with a kidney. Transplant Nephrologists round daily on two inpatient transplant services that include over 1500 medical and surgical admissions each year. Transplant Nephrology team performs over 1000 kidney transplant biopsies per year.

The outpatient care of the transplant recipients is exclusively provided by our transplant nephrology team. The stable patients are followed in a daily Transplant Clinic, comprising more than 6000 visits per year. Additionally, recipients recently discharged from the hospital and those experiencing complications such as rejection are seen in the Transitional Care Clinic that is located in the hospital. This clinic has over 2000 visits annually. Our transplant nephrologists also provide the primary medical transplant care services for the pancreas transplant recipients.

Over the recent years the Liver Transplant Program at the University of Maryland Medical Center has rapidly grown and each year close to 120 liver transplants are performed from both deceased and living donors. With the high rate of peri-operative and post-transplant renal complications, our faculty provides nephrology consultative services to these patients and provides for combined liver kidney transplant recipients. Moreover, the Division provides consultation to the Heart and Lung Transplant programs. These programs transplant about 50 recipients a year and continue to grow.

The Nephrology Division members are actively involved in designing clinical and immunosuppressive regimen protocols and conducting novel clinical research projects. Our transplant nephrologists are active participants in the weekly transplant meetings and conferences which include organ specific listing meetings, living donor meeting, transplant biopsy conference, morbidity and mortality conference, and a variety of educational conferences.

Kidney Transplant Fellowship Program

Department of Surgery: Division of Transplantation

The program provides patient access to the latest advances in transplant technology, as well as to the top-notch talent and broad resources of the UMMC Department of Surgery. The UMMC is one of the few centers nation-wide to offer simultaneous bilateral nephrectomy and kidney transplantation, where polycystic native kidneys are removed and a kidney transplant is performed in the same operation.

In 2009, the University of Maryland became the first hospital in Maryland, and only the third in the United States, to perform a single-port, natural orifice kidney removal surgery through the navel for a living kidney donor.

Today, University of Maryland transplant surgeons have performed more Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgeries (SILS) on living donors than in any other center in the nation.
