About Us
The Division of General Internal Medicine was founded on the principles of delivering excellent care and educating internists who have practiced across the state and region for almost 40 years. As the division has grown, it has also become active in innovative clinical, educational, and research programs, both here on campus and through our affiliated partners.
Our clinical programs offer the opportunity to learn how to provide quality medical care in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Outpatient practices include the Faculty Practice Office, which serves as a private practice for the campus and neighboring community. It offers primary care services, disease-management services and acute-care services. University Health Center, also located on this campus, serves as an additional training site, and offers primary care to patients in the surrounding community. The Baltimore VA Medical Center which serves a large number of veterans is staffed both full and part-time by members of the Division of General Internal Medicine and affiliated practitioners.
In the domain of hospital-based care, our division has been a leader in cost-effective care through the creation of several innovative services for the University of Maryland Medical Center. These services have been critical in addressing patient length-of-stay and charge-per-case for the hospital. In addition, our faculty attend on the inpatient service at the VA Medical Center and on the University Midtown Campus. The Division’s palliative care section is dedicated to offering symptom relief and patient-centered comfort care for advanced stage diseases in an effort to reduce or prevent hospitalizations.
Clinical research activities in General Internal Medicine include federally-funded and pilot initiatives. Federally-funded projects focus on health-information technology applications in chronic disease management, patient safety as it pertains to chronic disease, and clinical epidemiology of chronic kidney disease. Pilot initiatives include projects in rapid response team effectiveness and medical education. The Division also offers a health screening and medical monitoring service for non-clinician researchers with clinical protocols. The Division’s research staff includes a nurse coordinator, statistical support, and other research specialists. The research environment is fertile with research career development opportunities.
Our division has a strong commitment to the education of medical students and house staff here on campus and at our affiliated institutions. Division members serve in several key campus leadership positions, participate in numerous committees for the school, the hospital, and the practice plans, and oversee, and direct many of the training and educational programs of the Department and School.
