Summary of the Research Project:

Plasmodium falciparum is the most virulent Plasmodium species in the world and the principal human malaria-causing parasite associated with cerebral malaria pathogenesis. My research seeks to identify differentially expressed non-variant surface antigen genes within the P. falciparum genome that could contribute to immune evasion and sequestration of the parasite in tissue vasculature. Identification of differentially expressed parasite genes associated with cerebral malaria pathogenies could potentially inform the development of novel treatment methods or vaccine candidates.
