Listed below are all awards associated with the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and affiliated programs.  Students may apply any time after the Online Submission Form opens. 

  • The deadline for all Spring awards is March 29, 2024.  The Online Submission Form for Spring Awards is currently open. 
  • The Langenberg Endowment in Epidemiology & Women’s Health Award is awarded in the fall and spring semesters.  Criteria, requirements, and submission instructions are the same for the fall and spring awards.  Submissions for the Fall 2023 Langenberg Endowment award have closed.

  • Students may nominate themselves for more than one award.
  • Please download and read the award criteria and application requirements for each award, as the details and requirements vary for each award, and you will need to gather all application materials prior to submitting your application.
  • Some awards require that you submit your CV in UMSOM standard format.  Please visit the Office of Academic Administration's page to view the CV Standard Format Guidelines. 
  • Once you have gathered all your application materials, please click here to be taken to the nomination form.
  • Depending on the award, faculty may submit their letters of recommendation through the student, using the portal, or directly to erin.walton@som.umaryland.eduPlease double-check the requirements of the award to determine whether faculty can submit through the portal or directly to Erin Walton.

Dorothy and Morris Magaziner Endowment Award

Student – PhD, successfully defended dissertation proposal, enrolled in Doctoral Program in Epidemiology and Human Genetics at UMB or the Doctoral Program in Gerontology at UMB or UMBC

Self

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with UMB GPA.
  • A 1-page summary of the student’s dissertation topic.
  • A budget/justification for how funds will be used, not to exceed 1 page or $500.
  • A 2-page faculty letter of recommendation describing the nature and relevance of the student’s dissertation research to community and/or public health, and the reasons for nominating the student, which can include the student’s accomplishments in aging research.

Magaziner Endowment

The Gerontology Early Career Development Award

Student - PhD Gerontology, 2nd year or beyond, enrolled in Doctoral Program in Gerontology at UMB or UMBC

  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • An application not to exceed 4 pages describing current and/or completed work in aging research, career goals, how the award funds will be used and how they will contribute to your independent career goals.
  • A detailed description of how the award funds will be used, not to exceed 1 page
  • Unofficial transcript (most recent)
  • One letter of recommendation by a faculty member affiliated with the doctoral program (not serving on the Award Selection Committee) *must be submitted directly by faculty member

Gerontology Early Career Development

Langenberg Endowment in Epidemiology & Women’s Health Award

Students enrolled in one of the PhD programs in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UMB

Self

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) in SOM format with UMB GPA.
  • A one-page statement describing research interests, career goals, how the award funds will be used and how they will contribute to the student’s independent career goals.
  • A budget/justification not to exceed one page or $3,000.
  • A letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty affiliated with the student’s doctoral program (and not serving on the Award Selection Committee). Letters must be on letterhead and signed.

Patricia Langenberg Endowment

Renee Royak-Schaler Memorial Endowment Award

Student - PhD, MS, MPH, UMB-enrolled

Self

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) with UMB GPA.
  • A 1-2 page application describing current and/or completed work in health equity, health behavior, women’s health, cancer prevention, and/or community engagement and participation. The application should also include the student’s background, interests, any previous public health experience other than in the areas listed above, and professional goals.
  • A letter of recommendation from a person familiar with the student’s work (and not serving on the Award Selection Committee). Letters must be on letterhead and signed.

Abraham Lilienfeld Award for Excellence in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

To be considered eligible for this award, the nominated student must be in good standing and plan to graduate with the Class of 2024.  Nominations should include a) a brief description of the student’s commitment to epidemiology preventive medicine and public health (no more than one page); b) a CV; and c) a faculty nomination letter.

Robley Dunglinson Award for Excellence in Preventive Medicine
