New Faculty Orientation
Dear New Faculty Member,
Welcome to the University of Maryland School of Medicine 2021 New Faculty Orientation! We apologize for the delay to properly orient you to UMSOM, but better late than never. This year’s program is presented entirely online and significantly abbreviated compared to the all-day in-person program. The new online format allows you to complete the four hour-long orientation ‘blocks’ or ‘modules’ at your convenience. Each block is followed by a set of questions to ensure comprehension and completion of New Faculty Orientation.
Block 1 focuses on Welcome messages from Dean Reece, introduced by Vice Dean of Academic Affairs James Kaper PhD. Information on Conflict of Interest is also included in Block 1.
Block 2 features discussions on promotion and tenure, research, and resources needed to be successful in research endeavors.
Block 3 includes further details on education of graduate students, allied health students, medical students, and faculty professional development. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are introduced as core values, and an introduction to IT at the School of Medicine concludes this block.
Block 4 gives an overview of the clinical enterprise and finishes with two inspirational messages titled “Advice from Two Chairs: Balancing Teaching, Service, and Research Productivity.”
New Faculty Orientation is mandatory for all new faculty. Please view all four blocks and answer related questions by June 1, 2021.
Please read a welcome letter introducing the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development. We have included an agenda for NFO 2021, a helpful informational sheet, and key advice on keeping a Teaching Portfolio and a Clinical Portfolio (if applicable). Please review each document carefully. Again, welcome to the UMSOM. Please let us know if we can help you in any way.
