As of April 8, 2014, Microsoft stopped issuing security patches for the Windows XP operating system. Security issues identified after the last operating system patch was released may introduce security vulnerabilities into the School of Medicine network, so computers running Windows XP are not allowed to connect to the SOM network. Please call the help desk for assistance if your desktop/laptop is running Windows XP. We will assess whether the machine has enough resources to be reloaded with a supported operating system, needs to be upgraded, or should be replaced. If the machine is connected to lab equipment or running software that requires XP and can’t be upgraded, we can discuss options with you.

For more information about the potential security issues surrounding Windows XP after April 8, 2014, see these articles:

Note: Home versions of operating systems are not supported on the SOM Network. When purchasing new hardware, please choose the Enterprise versions of the Microsoft Operating Systems.
