Monday, January 11, 2016: Microsoft Office 365 Has Arrived
The University of Maryland School of Medicine Office of Information Services is beginning to roll out Office 365. We will do this in phases and communicate with you frequently. In phase one, Exchange Online and Skype for Business will be made available to those with an existing @som.umaryland.edu email accounts. The Exchange (Outlook) online benefits include an increase in the standard mailbox size from 2 GB to 50 GB, an updated look and enhanced capabilities within Outlook Web Access (https://mail.som.umaryland.edu). Skype for Business provides a way for you to connect with co-workers via Instant Messaging, video conference, and document sharing and collaborating. We’re really excited about this change, and hope you’ll like it!
This project will be ongoing through 2016. We will be contacting you via email 7 days before your migration will take place with more details on the email migration and how to begin using Skype for Business. In the meantime, see our Office 365 web page (please link to that new page) for information about Office 365 Exchange/Outlook and Skype for Business. Check back frequently for information on additional Office 365 features that will become available beyond phase one of this project.
February 20, 2015: Announcement of the approved Mobile Device Management Policy
The Information Technology Advisory Affairs Committee (ITAAC) has endorsed, and the FPI Board of Trustees recently approved a Mobile Device Policy which establishes requirements relating to the use of personal, university, and corporate mobile devices used for business purposes. The policy requires all workforce members to comply with the safeguards needed to protect individual workforce members and limit the organizational risk associated with the loss or theft of a mobile device (smartphone, tablet or laptop). The effective date of the policy is January 14, 2015, and all workforce members are required to be in compliance with the requirements of the Mobile Device Policy by May 29, 2015. New Way to Access SOMFiles
On Friday, December 6 2013, Information Services will upgrade the hardware that stores user and department data. Following the upgrade users accessing data while on-Campus will need to reboot their computers. The new login script will automatically map the new drives for Windows systems. Users who access data from off campus or who use a MAC, will need to manually re-map the drives following the instructions detailed here.
June 8, 2012 - eduroam
The University of Maryland School of Medicine has joined eduroam (education roaming), a secure, worldwide roaming Internet access service developed for the international research and education community. eduroam allows campus community members at any participating institution to use wireless network services at any other participating institution with the simplicity and convenience of using the login credentials issued to them by their home institutions.
This means that SOM students, faculty, and staff visiting member institutions abroad may use email@example.com (for Information Services' customers, this is the user/network/directory ID and also the email address) and network/email password to log into wireless at other member institutions. Additionally, university community members of eduroam member institutions can use their logins and passwords to access the wireless network here at SOM. There are member institutions in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Asia/Pacific region. Read more about availability of eduroam service.
The SSID for eduroam broadcasted through the SOM buildings is: eduroam.
Microsoft Exchange 2010 Upgrade Planned
Beginning today, and continuing for 4-6 weeks, Information Services will be migrating mailboxes from MS Exchange 2007 to MS Exchange 2010. We will be upgrading multiple mailbox a day on a daily basis. Customers will receive an email the day before their mailbox is scheduled to be migrated to Exchange 2010, but this is a transparent upgrade that will have no impact on the ability to send or receive email.
Concurrent with releases of new Microsoft server software, there is an updated list of the client software that will be supported. Please see the following list for the preferred, supported, and de-supported client software.

If you connect to SOM Email (email@example.com) using your Smartphone, you may need to reboot the unit (power off, remove the battery, power on) to enable your phone to re-discover your mailbox.

SOM Information Services is currently rolling out Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to machines supported by the SOM IS Helpdesk. SCCM is a replacement to the LANDesk application that was previously used by SOM IS. SCCM will help SOM IS and its customers with software and hardware inventory management, security patch deployment, application deployment, and remote helpdesk administration. A small client will be distributed mostly undetected to machines to provide the above functionality over the coming weeks. The LANDesk client will also be removed from machines. See our Service page for a link to a new password management application. This application offers staff who have a SOM network account* the ability to create a profile that can be used to manage a password and keep the information in the Campus Global Address List (GAL) up to date.
* SOM network accounts are issued for @SOM.umaryland.edu email accounts, file shares on Information Services hosted servers, SOM VPN which allows access to resources from off campus, Ektron web content management system, BRAAN, WebRPR, and numerous internal applications.

In an effort to better secure and protect the SOM Network and the data we all create, a strengthening of the SOM Domain Password Policy and a SOM Domain Password Protected Screensaver Policy will become effective on Monday, September 20, 2010. These policies are consistent with the UMB IT Password Management Policy, the UMB Computer Workstation Security Policy and general industry best practices.
For the SOM Domain Password Policy, the following password requirements will be enforced when passwords are changed or created on every SOM Domain Account password starting Monday, September 20, 2010:
- Minimum Password Length: 8 characters
- Maximum Password Age: 120 days
- Account Lockout Threshold: 5 invalid logon attempts
- Enforce Password History: 20 passwords remembered
- Passwords Must Not Contain: The user's account name or parts of the user's full name that exceed two consecutive characters
- Passwords Must Meet 3 of the 4 below Complexity Requirements:
- English uppercase characters (A through Z)
- English lowercase characters (a through z)
- Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
- Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)
For the SOM Domain Password Protected Screensaver Policy, all computers on the SOM Domain with a SOM Domain User logged on will have a screensaver enabled after 15 minutes of inactivity starting Monday, September 20, 2010. To access the computer after the screensaver is enacted, a username and password will have to be correctly entered.
Moreover, there are SOM computers on campus that are not connected to the SOM Domain for various reasons, but, access SOM IT systems, please also configure these campus systems under your control to follow the above policies.
