Letter from our Chief Residents

Welcome to the University of Maryland Anesthesiology Residency Program! Selecting your residency is such an exciting milestone in your career and you could not begin this journey in a more wonderful place.

Here at UMMC we have both a categorical 4-year program and an advanced 3-year program. Those entering the University of Maryland family during their PGY-1 year will benefit from managing medically complex, high acuity patients in a variety of settings. The categorical interns will also join the department for 6 weeks throughout the year; 1 month will be dedicated to clinical time in the operating rooms, with the remaining 2 weeks spent learning about our role as quality and safety advocates in the hospital. The advanced 3-year residents will join the class in July the following year as CA-1s. You will spend your first month together building a solid foundation in the basics of anesthetic and perioperative care. All CA-1s will have protected education time during July to participate in a thorough and structured didactic program that will prepare you for your clinical responsibilities in the OR. You will each be paired with another CA-1 and a senior resident or attending for the first few weeks to help ease the transition into independent clinical care.

The strength of our residency program at Maryland is highlighted by the variety of our cases (high volume of cardiac, transplant and major vascular procedures) and high acuity patient population with a CMS Case-Mix Index in the 99th percentile. Our graduating residents demonstrate exceptional clinical competency and obtain coveted fellowships and careers in private practice and academic institutions all over the country.

With an average work week of 50-60 hours per week, residents have plenty of time to explore the city of Baltimore and all that the DMV area has to offer. Charm City, as Baltimore is so affectionately known, is a cultural hub with countless restaurants and entertainment, including several professional sports teams with two stadiums walking distance from the medical center.

The department also hosts several gatherings throughout the year including the annual holiday party, Resident Retreat and family summer picnic with the famous steamed Maryland blue crabs with old bay.

We are excited that you are considering us in your search for training. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. We hope to meet you and wish you the best of luck in this process!
