Letter from our Chief Residents

Welcome to the University of Maryland Anesthesiology Residency Program! Choosing your residency is an exciting time, and we’d like to tell you why we think Maryland is a fantastic place to train.

We have a categorical 4-year program and an advanced 3-year program. For those entering the University of Maryland family during PGY-1 year, you experience taking care of high acuity patients with complex medical histories that you will be caring for in the coming years in the operating room as an anesthesiologist. You get exposed to our Anesthesiology department during your PGY-1 year during a 1-month clinical anesthesia rotation and our unique 2-week academic anesthesiology rotation.

Upon arrival to Maryland for our advanced 3-year residents, as a CA-1, your first month is geared towards building a solid foundation for your career in anesthesiology. For your introductory month in July, the department prepares a thorough and structured didactic program in teaching basics of anesthesia with protected educational time for all residents. In addition, you are paired with another CA-1 and an Anesthesiology attending to start learning how to care for your patients intraoperatively.

The strength of our residency program at Maryland is highlighted by both a strong didactic program and clinically high acuity. Along with its focus on academics, Maryland exceeds in its clinical complexity with a CMS Case-Mix Index in the 99th%. Our graduating residents have success in both matching coveted fellowship positions and in pursuing attending jobs after graduation.

With an average work-hour week of 50-60 hours per week, residents have more than enough time to explore the city of Baltimore and all it has to offer. Residents often visit the neighborhoods of Fells Point, Federal Hill and Hampden for dinners or concerts. The department also offers multiple outings during the year, including our annual Resident Retreat, Summer picnic featuring all-you-can-eat Maryland crabs, the Christmas holiday party and the Annual Graduation Ceremony in June.

We are excited you are considering us, and Charm City, in your search for training. Please feel free to reach out to us if you need anything! We are looking forward to seeing you all! Best of luck!
