Medical Student Education

The Department of Anesthesiology takes an active role in training medical students at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

  • ANES 530
    This Anesthesiology Clerkship is offered to third-year students and consists of one week of subspecialty of anesthesiology and one week of general anesthesiology.   Students work as part of the anesthesiology team caring for patients having surgery in the general, UMROI, and trauma operating rooms. In addition students may work as part of the chronic pain team, acute pain team, or obstetrics anesthesiology team caring for this specialized population of patients. Read More.
  • ANES 541
    This is an anesthesiology elective offered to fourth-year medical students. Visiting students may enroll. It is a 4 week elective taught at University of Maryland Shock Trauma  Center and University of Maryland Medical Center. The prerequisites for this course are completion of either GSUR 53: Core Surgery Clerkship or MEDC 530 Core Medicine Clerkship.  This elective provides broad inside into the practice of anesthesia through participation in various subspecialties of anesthesiology (cardiac, neuro-anesthesia, pediatrics, regional, obstetrics, trauma). It demonstrates the function of the anesthesiologist in preoperative evaluation, intraoperative management, post anesthesia care and pain management. Read More.
  • ANES 542
    This is a Pain Management elective offered to fourth-year medical students. The prerequisites are completion of the first three years of medical school The elective is taught at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute. This elective will offer students broad exposure to strategies and techniques employed in pain management. Such experience would be valuable to students entering either primary care or medical/surgical sub-specialties. Read More.
  • ANES 548
    This is a Sub-Internship in Surgical Critical Care Anesthesiology for fourth-year medical students. The prerequisites are completion of three quarters (9 months ) of the third year of medical school and the clerkship of the same department as the sub-internship, MEDC 530 Core Medicine Clerkship, GSUR Core Surgery Clerkship and is held at the University of Maryland Medical Center.  This course is a joint offering from the departments of anesthesiology and surgery.  The goal of this course is to provide the student with sound physiologic background and clinical experience for the effective evaluation and management of critically ill patients. The student will participate in daily work and teaching rounds and have responsibility for the care of assigned patients under the direction of the SICU physician team. Read More. Anesthesiology Externship

This program is for University of Maryland Students only.

Introduction

In addition to teaching anesthesiology rotations to first- year medical students and providing several electives and a clerkship for fourth-year medical students, the Department of Anesthesiology offers a four-week externship to University of Maryland School of Medicine students finishing their first year who are interested in learning more about the field. A stipend is provided.

The externship will offer students an opportunity to get hands-on experience in general anesthesiology and includes a two- week anesthesiology sub-specialties rotation, covering topics in:

Critical Care Medicine Neuro-Anesthesiology
Obstetric Anesthesiology  Pediatric Anesthesiology
Regional Anesthesiology Transplant Anesthesiology
Trauma Anesthesiology

Requirements

The Department of Anesthesiology offers an Anesthesiology Medical Student Externship open only to University of Maryland School of Medicine medical students who are finishing their first year of medical school in good standing.
