Dr. Thelma Wright

Congratulations to Thelma Wright, MD, JD, Associate Professor on her new NIH grant collaborating with UMBC researchers titled “A novel continuous real-time non-invasive CO2 monitor to help prevent death in the underserved minority population from opioid overdose”. In response to the increasing opioid epidemic, this grant focuses on developing a non-invasive CO2 monitor device to detect and reverse an opioid overdose in real-time. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics reported that during a 12-month period, more than 100,000 drug overdoses were recorded in the U.S., with nearly 76,000 deaths attributed to opioid usage. This grant was also featured on the UMBC science and tech web news page.
