Congratulations to Thelma Wright, MD, JD, Associate Professor on her new NIH grant collaborating with UMBC researchers titled “A novel continuous real-time non-invasive CO2 monitor to help prevent death in the underserved minority population from opioid overdose”. In response to the increasing opioid epidemic, this grant focuses on developing a non-invasive CO2 monitor device to detect and reverse an opioid overdose in real-time. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics reported that during a 12-month period, more than 100,000 drug overdoses were recorded in the U.S., with nearly 76,000 deaths attributed to opioid usage.
