The 33rd Professors Martin Helrich and M. Jane Matjasko Annual Lecture in Anesthesiology was held virtually for the first time on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 5 p.m. The lecturer this year was Steven L. Shafer, M.D., Professor of Anesthesiology Perioperative and Pain Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Shafer’s areas of interest include data modeling, the clinical pharmacology of intravenous anesthetic drugs, and publication policy and ethics.  He is well known for his 10 years as editor-in-chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia (2006-2016) and for his work as an expert witness for the state of California in the Conrad Murray trial for the death of Michael Jackson. The title of his lecture was “Reproducibility Crisis in Scientific Research.”

Dr. Shafer also presented virtual Grand Rounds to the Department of Anesthesiology on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 7 a.m. The title of his lecture was” Propofol: Murder, Mayhem and Mercy.”
