Secondary

Secondary Appointments – Volunteer (non-tenure track)  

  • Secondary appointments are given at the same rank as the primary appointment, with ‘secondary’ in parenthesis following the rank.
  • Secondary appointment ranks are only prefixed with “Adjunct” or “Clinical” if the primary appointment rank is prefixed with “Adjunct” or Clinical”.
  • Secondary appointments are only awarded to faculty who hold a primary appointment within the School of Medicine or another UMB School or a University System of Maryland Institution (e.g., UMBC, UMCP, etc.)

If primary appointment is within the School of Medicine:

  • If the secondary appointment request is being submitted at the same time as the SOM primary appointment request, include the Secondary Appointment Request form in the primary appointment packet, after the Chair’s letter. (CV, CV verification form, and Demographic form do not need to be duplicated).
  • Refer to the Secondary Appointment Guidelines and Checklist  (NEW!) for packet requirements and submission instructions.
  • Faculty appointments above the rank of Instructor may take 1 to 2 months to complete, as they need to be reviewed by the OAA, School of Medicine Council, and Dean.

If primary appointment is outside the School of Medicine, but within the University of Maryland System:

  • Refer to the Secondary Appointment Guidelines and Checklist  (NEW!)  for packet requirements and submission instructions.
  • Faculty appointments at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor will need to be reviewed by the OAA, Executive Committee, School of Medicine Council, and Dean, which may take 2 to 4 months to complete.
  • Faculty appointments above the rank of Instructor may take 1 to 2 months to complete, as they need to be reviewed by the OAA, School of Medicine Council, and Dean.
