Biosketch

The primary focus of my research is examining dietary and lifestyle risk factors for cancer risk and prognosis and their underlying mechanisms using epidemiologic methods. I have conducted several epidemiologic research projects on diet and breast and colorectal cancers integrating nutrition, cancer epidemiology, pathology, and molecular biology. For example, using primary data from over 1 million women from 20 cohorts from North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia in the Pooling Project of Prospective Studies of Diet and Cancer (DCPP), I examined associations between several dietary factors, including fruits, vegetables, folate, and alcohol consumption, and the risk of breast cancer overall and of its subtypes as defined by hormone receptor status. I found that high vegetable intake and low alcohol consumption is significantly associated with a lower risk of estrogen receptor negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of breast cancer that is less responsive to hormonal treatment. I also examined the association of carotenoids with colorectal adenomas; the association of vitamin D with colorectal cancer subtypes as defined by the vitamin D receptor expression level and by the mutation status of KRAS, BRAF, and PIK3CA; and the timing of vitamin B2 intake with colorectal cancer.

 

I have a strong interest in identifying early life factors associated with breast cancer risk. Notably, it is increasingly perceived that breast tissue is most sensitive to endogenous and exogenous stimuli during the critical window, when breasts develop and undergo structural changes. Furthermore, breast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among young women aged 45 years and younger. Young breast cancer cases typically have worse clinicopathological phenotypes, being less responsive to treatment and disproportionally affecting young underserved women. Since 2014 at UMSOM, I have been involved in multiple projects examining how early life factors can potentially affect the risk of breast cancer among young women in the Dietary Intervention Study in Children study. I found that higher endogenous DHEAS concentrations and intakes of higher saturated fat and lower mono- and polyunsaturated fat during adolescence are significantly associated with higher breast density among young women aged 25–29 years. Taking advantage of a collaborative environment at UMSOM, my near-term research goal is to expand research efforts on identifying modifiable, early life risk factors and characterizing serum metabolites and metabolic pathways that are related to early initiation of breast cancer among young women. I also aim to investigate potential mechanisms related to disparities in breast cancer using data from a large nationally representative study of adults and children in the United States. My ultimate goal is to develop a new prevention and risk reduction program of breast cancer for younger adults.
