About Dr. Warnick:

Dr. Warnick is the Director of the Office of Student Research and is responsible for all programmatic activities within the office. Dr. Warnick established and has directed the medical student (1982) and undergraduate (1991) summer research programs at UMB/UMSOM and the undergraduate and medical student international research programs since their inception. In addition, he has directed or co-directed several other programs including "Year-Off" training grants for medical students from the American Heart Association, an NSF Science Teacher Enhancement Program and the summer research program of the NSF's Maryland Collaborative for Teacher Preparation.

Dr. Warnick did his graduate work at Purdue University, was the recipient of an NIH postdoctoral fellowship and Special Individual NIH Awardee at the Department of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics, State University of New York at Buffalo. He was a faculty member of the School of Pharmacy in Buffalo from 1971-1974. In 1974, he joined the Department of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics at the UM SOM where he rose to Professor of Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics. He has a long-standing commitment to biomedical research [more than 160 publications (>75 manuscripts, 5 chapters and 80 abstracts)] that most recently centered on the effects of neuropeptides and nerve gases on synaptic pharmacology in the spinal cord. In his educational role, he is the Co-course Director for Pathophysiology & Therapeutics in the second year of medical school where he interacts with students throughout the second year in lectures, small groups and laboratories and teaches central and peripheral nervous system drugs and diseases. He has been a thesis advisor, research preceptor for medical students and has trained several postdoctoral fellows (MD and PhD).

About Ms. Jean Marie Roth:

Ms. Roth supports the second year courses, Host Defenses and Infectious Diseases (HDID) and Pathophysiology & Therapeutics (P&T) I and II. She works closely with well over 250 faculty from 16 departments and all second-year medical students. The syllabi for these three sophomore courses include over 300 lectures, 80 small groups and 30 laboratories, all of which are corrected, edited, re-formatted in this office and then copied. Ms. Roth supports the second year Autopsy Program (Dr. Raymond Jones), the development of course evaluations and schedules, P&T exams, all mailings, and ordering of textbooks for the courses. In addition, she also provides administrative support to the P&T Committee (Drs. Jordan E. Warnick & Gary Plotnick, Co-Chairs) and the Year I/II Education Subcommittee (Dr. Raymond Flores, Chair).

About Charity:

I coordinate all of the activities of PROMISE as well as manage the student resource room located in 300C MSTF. The program depends heavily on developing materials for students of diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and I am responsible for developing these materials that are useful for helping students to share survival strategies, establish a sense of community, build strong support, networks, and learn skills to help them in their quest for obtaining the Ph.D. degree at UMB.

Before joining UMB and the School of Medicine, I worked as an Academic Program Coordinator for the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (JHSPH). My main responsibility was to co-ordinate the admissions of new graduate students, their registration and overall well-being while being enrolled as a student in our department. Part of my responsibilities also includes participation in recruitment activities, organizing educational events, and coordinating departmental committees meetings.

Prior to working at JHSPH, I was the Administrative Support Staff in office of the Dean of the Graduate School, University of Missouri, in Columbia, Missouri. As an administrative support staff, I coordinated recruitment activities and traveled to recruitment fairs, coordinated commencement activities for the Graduate School, organized orientation activities, coordinated McNair Scholars visitation and summer programs. I also, coordinated seminars and retreats for postdoctoral fellows, assisted the Association of Black Graduate Students with their activities, and managed the graduate school on-line application.

Toni Harris

Antanett (Toni) Harris is the newest member to join the Office of Student Research staff. Ms. Harris serves as the coordinator for our Summer and Volunteer Research Training Programs and the MD/MPH Program. She also serves as a liaison with summer programs in the other professional schools. She is responsible for the summer Colloquium on Science, Student Research Forum, short course on Ethical & Responsible Conduct of Research and Medical Student Research Day. Additionally, she oversees the departmental budget and website.

Prior to joining the Office of Student Research, Toni spent ten years at the Johns Hopkins University working in various administrative capacities. Most recently, she was the Senior Administrative Assistant to the Chair and Coordinator for the Summer Institute in Mental Health Research in the Department of Mental Health, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. 

Toni is currently pursuing a MBA in Finance from the University of Baltimore.
