As the Assistant Dean for Student Research and Education, Dr. Thom oversees and is responsible for all of the functions of the Office of Student Research including student research programs, combined degree programs (MD/MS), educational community outreach programs and the development of research education and training. In addition, she is the co-course director for Foundations of Research and Critical Thinking with Dr. Matteson. Dr. Thom is a member of the Division of Genomic Epidemiology and Clinical Outcomes in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health. Dr. Thom is currently funded by the Agency of Healthcare Research Quality and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her area of research focus includes the study of antimicrobial resistant pathogens, prevention of infections in the healthcare setting and antimicrobial stewardship.

As the Director of Student Summer Research and Community Outreach, Dr. Carey oversees and is responsible for medical student research activities, including electives, summer and year-off activities. He oversees recruitment to and advising for the School of Medicine's summer research programs for health professional, undergraduate and high school students. In his outreach roles within the OSR and as a co-chair on the President's Outreach Council, Dr. Carey explores research, mentoring and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) educational opportunities for students at all levels and from broad backgrounds, on and off the UMB campus. In addition, Dr. Carey is the leader (P.I.) of an NIH/NCI-funded research program focused on increasing the understanding of factors that determine life and death decisions in lymphoma and in other cancers. His teaching activities cover both basic and special topics in immunology and oncology in the Graduate School and the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Carey is a member of the Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Diseases (CVID) and of the Greenebaum Cancer Center.

As the Director of Dual Degree Programs, Dr. Matteson is responsible for developing, overseeing and directing all of the MD/MS programs in the School of Medicine. As the Director of Student Research Education, Dr. Matteson is responsible for developing a new Medical School course called Foundations of Research and Critical Thinking (FRCT), and he will be the Course Director for FRCT, which will begin in the Fall of 2013. In addition, he is the Course Director for Functional Systems, for GPILS 601 "Mechanisms in Biomedical Sciences " (aka, The Core Course), as well as the Co-Director of Pathophysiology and Therapeutics I/II. In addition, he is a member of the Department of Physiology.

Ms. Cao's primary responsibilities are to manage and coordinate all of the research-related aspects of the Office of Student Research. She works closely with Dr. Greg Carey in managing student summer research and training programs (e.g., PRISM, HP-STAR, UM Scholars), research electives, year-off research experiences (e.g., Doris Duke, Howard Hughs), Medical Student Research Day, and other programs and services. Ms. Cao also assists Dr. Carey in providing research advising for medical students and provides support for community outreach efforts.

Ms. Eldridge is the Administrative Assistant for the Office of Student Research. She provides administrative support for student research programs, OSR student awards, combined degree programs (MD/MS), Foundations of Research and Critical Thinking (FRCT) course and research electives. She works closely with Dr. Thom, Dr. Matteson and Dr. Carey to provide assistance with scheduling, summer student programming and database management.
