UMB Student Counseling Center
The Counseling Center is staffed by licensed professionals, including social workers, clinical psychiatrists and a substance abuse specialist. The center is not a training site for any profession. Services at the Counseling Center are covered by your student health fee. There is no out-of-pocket expense at the time of service.
The ability to resolve difficulties and achieve personal growth are qualities which are highly valued, and UMB is committed to enriching each student's experience to the fullest extent possible. Some of the issues that students come to the Counseling Center to discuss include family concerns, relationship problems, stress, significant losses or life transitions, depression or anxiety, eating or sleeping problems and many other concerns. The Counseling Center also provides medication evaluation and management services.
A student's visits to the Counseling Center are private and no information will be shared with anyone without the student's permission. CONFIDENTIALITY IS STRICTLY PRESERVED. The center is a private and comfortable environment for you to go to talk about your problems.
The Counseling Center is located in the Health Sciences Library. Hours are 8:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday (after 5p.m., by appointment only), and 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Medical school may be a time of great stress and transition for some students, and personal or psychological problems may arise which require advice, counseling or psychotherapy. Occasionally these problems are school-related; more often, they may emerge in other areas such as relationship or family problems, difficulty dealing with changes in home or school life, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, sleep or concentration. Services include stress management programs, comprehensive evaluations, as well as individual, family, couples and group therapy. CONFIDENTIALITY IS STRICTLY PRESERVED. The Maryland State Medical Society, recognizing the seriousness of the problems of alcohol and other drug dependencies, psychiatric or emotional illnesses and organic or physical impairments of Maryland physicians and medical students, created the Physician Health Committee in 1978.
Impaired medical students, like impaired physicians, generally do not seek help of their own accord for a variety of reasons: denial that a problem exists, inability to comprehend its seriousness, or fear of reprisal. The fact that these elements often are present just as strongly in a student's family, colleagues and friends, makes voluntary requests for help even more rare. Effective intervention is valuable, not only for assessing the nature and seriousness of a student's impairment, but also for persuading him or her to seek appropriate treatment, while simultaneously protecting the student's dignity, preserving anonymity and sparing him or her embarrassment. Intervention is done with compassion, empathy and sincerity; the attitude is non-judgmental and supportive (the impaired student is not a weak, disgusting, bad or immoral person). In the event a student needs emergency psychiatric consultation (for example, potentially suicidal), arrangements will be made for him or her to be seen immediately by a psychiatrist. The Physician Health Committee will cover up to $300.00 in initial expenses. There will be fees for any further treatment, but there may be a sliding scale for medical students - still not determined. In addition, the Committee acts as an advocate for the student.
