Biologic Research: CHAMPS

Child and Adolescent Metabolic and Psychotropic Medication Side Effect Research (CHAMPS)

The primary focus of this biologic research program is to study metabolic health among individuals with mental illness. We explore this issue by investigating metabolic side effects of psychiatric medications and the association of different psychiatric conditions with obesity related health problems. The metabolic assessments in our research protocols include body composition analysis, physical activity monitoring (actigraphy), food intake assessment, hunger/craving evaluation, insulin sensitivity, and measurement of peptide appetite hormones.

Research Questions

  • Validation of self-report screening tools
  • Prevalence of pre-psychotic symptoms in different settings (primary care, mental health, schools)
  • Association of pre-psychotic symptoms with metabolic parameters and toxoplasmosis
